Determination of the Lasing Mode Structure in Finite 1D Optical Potentials: Inverse Problem Solution
We describe how discrete modes of a Fabry‐Perot laser can be selected using a non‐periodic patterning of the cavity effective index. Experimental measurements of a two‐mode device designed in this way are presented and it is shown that an all‐optical memory element can be based on the injection locking bistability of the device. We also demonstrate passive harmonic mode‐locking of a device designed to support four modes and discuss prospects for the extension of our approach to locking of larger numbers of modes over wider bandwidths.
