We demonstrate the feasibility of discovering supermassive black hole (SMBHs) in “normal” spiral galaxies using a combination of X‐ray selection and multi‐wavelength follow‐up. We carried out a Chandra survey of nearly face‐on spiral galaxies and uncovered a population of low‐mass SMBHs providing a way to investigate the low‐mass end of the local BH mass function. We were sensitive to Eddington luminosity ratios as low as Some galaxies with small or no bulges also appear to host SMBHs. This calls into question whether the fundamental property related to a nuclear SMBH is the bulge or the dark matter halo.
