ZnO, CdO and ZnCdO thin films exhibiting various nanostructures on the surface were grown by electrodeposition technique. The effect of deposition potential on the growth of thin films and nanostructures were studied. It has been observed that for ternary system ZnCdO, the best deposition potential for cadmium doping was ‐0.7 V and at other potentials mixed phases were observed. The grown samples were annealed in air at 300 and 500° C, respectively. All obtained CdO, ZnO and ZnCdO films were polycrystalline in nature. The grain size of the nanocrystals of the film was estimated from XRD. The grain size was strongly dependent on the annealing temperature. The surface composition was investigated by Energy dispersive spectroscopy. All films were highly transparent in the visible region of the spectrum. The transmittance of the films decreased with incorporation of CdO. Bandgap of the nanocrystalline films varied in the range of 2.75–3.25 eV.
