The per‐pixel energy‐ and time‐capability of the position‐sensitive Timepix detector allows for spatial‐ and time‐correlated detection of radioactive ions and their subsequent decay in the same sensor. The high granularity of the pixel detector allows applying not only temporal but also spatial coincidence technique for background suppression. This is particularly important for scarcely populated nuclei and/or detection under high rate of unwanted/background events. For these different situations two methods were developed using a segmented ionization chamber as trigger: (i) a time‐delayed opening (start) of the detector shutter, and (ii) a trigger‐driven external clock with varying time delay with the detector shutter open. For these approaches, Timepix was operated in its time mode and in its time‐over‐threshold mode, respectively. The methods are demonstrated on the detection and decay measurement of and ions as well as of the 7.6 μs 496.2 keV isomer respectively. Measurements were carried out with radioactive ion beams from the Lohengrin fission fragment mass separator at the ILL Grenoble.
