Criteria for the characterization of bulk metamaterial behavior of two‐dimensional (2D) periodic composites are presented. Such criteria are appropriate even for composites with highly lossy constituents such as polaritonic materials. These tests were applied to ascertain the behavior of 2D polaritonic photonic crystals as bulk uniaxial hyperbolic metamaterials. It is discussed in detail how such type of metamaterials have a unique polarization filtering behavior just by changing the angle of incidence, thus becoming well‐suited optical set‐up components at THz frequencies.
