The value of the linear moment of an electromagnetic wave, propagating in the material, in particular in a metamaterial with negative refractive index is considered. It is shown that in this case linear momentum is proportional to the wave energy and inversely proportional to its phase velocity. The question of the so‐called “Minkowsky‐Abragam controversy” is considered and resolved. It is shown that the Minkowski tensor treats the electromagnetic field as a wave, but the Abraham tensor—as a collection of particles. Thus, “Minkowsky‐Abragam controversy” is reduced to an old dispute between supporters of the wave and particles nature of light. Taking into account that the Abraham tensor is not relativistic covariant, we must recognize the unsuitability of the Abraham tensor for the calculation of the ponderomotive forces acting on the substance of the field.
