Gate arrays are used for parallel processing and fast shower foot recognition, in the electromagnetic calorimeter of the CP violation experiment at LEAR, CERN.
Data from over 64000 active cells are examined and stereographic views are combined in order to determine the number of showers and the three dimensional shower feet in less than 25 →s. Speed, compactness, flexibility and confidence arguments have been satisfied in a solution based on a processor made of 126 slices of 3800 gates chips. The processor is in an autotest mode, when not solicited by a physical event to guarantee continuous confidence capability.
