The most natural realist view of the physical world is one of independently existing bodies. The question of how one might yet represent quantum systems realistically, given its indeterministic nature and the presence of locally inexplicable distant correlations associated with entanglement, has continued to be central to the investigation of the foundations of quantum theory. Underlying the question is the grounding of individuality, which relates also to the relationship between wholes and parts. These issues and some recent attempts to address them are discussed here.
