To improve the stretch flangeability of ultra-high strength steel sheets having a low ductility, flanging with a gradually contacting punch was developed. In the gradually contacting punch, the tensile stress is decreased by gradually pressing the edge of the sheet with the inclined bottom of the punch. The stretch flanging process was simulated by the finite element method to obtain detailed information during flanging. As the flange length increases, the stretch flanging ratio increases, and the fracture occurred beyond the critical value. The critical flange heights of bent 980 and 1180 MPa ultrahigh strength steel sheets without fracture with the gradually contacting punch increased by 32% and 31%, respectively.
