Physics in higher dimensions, knots, and differentiable structures

A brief review of a geometric unification of the Yang-Mills and the Higgs sectors of the electroweak model with gravitation is given, including how to obtain solutions to the Lagrangian which present spontaneous compactification of the extra dimensions. Some important pending questions are formulated, and the issue of why there are effectively 4 dimensions is discussed. A relation to knot theory is mentioned, and a non-standard differentiable structure on R 4 is given together with some of its properties.
