The TTS (dB) in the first 4 min after sound exposure as a function of the sound exposure level (SEL), for a harbor porpoise ( ), for fatiguing sounds at 124 dB re 1 μPa (○, 7.5, 15, 30, 60, 120, and 240 min), 136 dB re 1 μPa (□, 7.5, 15, 30, 60, 120, and 240 min), and 148 dB re 1 μPa (△, 7.5, 15, 30, 60, 120, and 240 min), and for a harbor seal ( ), for fatiguing sounds at 124 dB re 1 μPa (•, 60, 120, and 240 min), 136 dB re 1 μPa (▪, 7.5, 15, 30, 60, 120, and 240 min), and 148 dB re 1 μPa (▲, 7.5, 15, 30, 60, 120, and 240 min). Results are shown, from left to right, in order of increasing duration of fatiguing noise. TTS onset SEL depends on the exposure SPL and exposure duration.

FIG. 2.

The recovery of the hearing sensitivity of seal 02 after unintentional exposure to an OBN centered at 4 kHz for 60 min at a mean received SPL of 163 dB re 1 μPa. The maximum TTS, 12–16 min after the noise exposure stopped, was 44 dB.

FIG. 3.

TTS in harbor seals due to 60 min exposure to octave-band noise centered around 4 kHz. Data from and results reported in the present study. The gray bar indicates the ∼150–160 dB SPL range within which the critical level falls. Above this level, the increase in TTS with increasing SPL accelerates.
