The layer and Al electrode on the layer are microscale meshed type, etched by the photolithography and dry etching technique. Most of the surfaces of the electron emission layer are exposed to vacuum.

The Al electrodes are formed into nanoscale grating structures with an appropriate periodicity, etched by the photolithography and dry etching techniques. The nanoscale apertures are fabricated in the part of the grating structures by every ten grating periods. A small part of the surface of the electron emission layer is exposed to vacuum.

SEM image of the present photocathode with nanoscale grating antennas. The Al electrode is formed into nanoscale grating structures with periodicity of approximately 1200 nm. The stripe shaped nanoscale apertures are formed in the part of the grating structures by every ten grating periods. The width of the aperture is less than 600 nm.
