Cover: This composite image, from data collected in 2006 by the National Center for Airborne Laser Mapping, shows the Nyack floodplain along the Flathead River in Montana. Infrared laser pulses from an aircraft scan the terrain, and their reflected signals yield topographic features, including trees and other vegetation (left). Filtering out the vegetation reveals the bare surface (right). To learn more about laser scanning, turn to the article by Bill Carter, Ramesh Shrestha, and Clint Slatton on page 41.

Abstract    Full Text: [ HTML   PDF (1911 kB)  ]

      Geodetic Laser Scanning
Producing surface maps at submeter resolution, even over heavily forested terrain, GLS can reveal the fine structure of such features as faults, landslides, and drainage patterns.

Abstract    Full Text: [ HTML   PDF (190 kB)  ]

New Experiments Fuel Debate Over the Nature of High-Tc Superconductors
A central issue is whether an observed energy gap seen above the critical temperature Tc is related to or different from the superconducting gap seen below Tc.
