The polymerisation of ternary and quaternary sodium fullerides, Na2Rb1−xCsxC60 (0<=x<=1) is studied by neutron and synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction at both ambient and elevated pressure. All Na2Rb1−xCsxC60 (0<=x<=1) salts, except Na2CsC60, polymerise at ambient pressure upon slow cooling. Na2CsC60 polymerises only upon application of pressure, the cubic phase surviving to ~0.84 GPa. The monomer-->polymer phase transition in Na2RbC60 is followed in detail for both slow cooling and heating procedures, as well as a function of time at low temperature. High resolution powder neutron diffraction confirms the monoclinic (P21/a) structure of Na2RbC60 at 2.5 K and allows the determination of the interball bridging C-C bond distance as 1.70(7) Å. ©1998 American Institute of Physics.
