In this paper, we briefly review the history of the nonstandard finite difference (NSFD) methods and their application to a wide range of physical and biological problems. Emphasis is given on the use of the nonstandard discretization ideas to the numerical solution of continuous dynamical systems. In that context, specific examples of positive and elementary stable nonstandard (PESN) finite difference schemes are presented. We also outline possible future research directions for the construction of structural property-preserving numerical methods and discuss some open problems in the general area of nonstandard discretizations of differential equations.
