This article shows that nanosize (10–15  nm thick) MgO protective coatings can be formed on glass surfaces, using aqueous and water-alcohol solutions of magnesium nitrate. The effect of the concentration and pH of the solutions on the coating structure is investigated. ©2010 Optical Society of America
