We report the experimental and numerical observation of step-like behavior of the high-intensity transmission deep inside the bandgap of a 1D photonic crystal. We show this to be a novel manifestation of the quantization of the soliton area, and derive an upper limit for the energy of the transmission steps, which is consistent with measurements and simulations. ©2010 Optical Society of America
