What is the "Article Collection" Feature?
The "Article Collection" feature allows users to select articles of
interest from any HTML Table of Contents (TOC) or abstract-view page, or from a
Search Results page (subscribers only). Selected titles are added to a
list or "collection" that includes links to the abstract and full-text
(which can be viewed or downloaded). The collection is accessible
indefinitely, as long as it is accessed at least once in 90 days
(collections that are not accessed at least once every 90 days are erased).
About Your Browser and Using this Service
Please make sure that you are using this service with the
latest versions of the browsers recommended for use
with the OJPS and SPIN Web, namely Netscape Navigator
and Microsoft Internet Explorer.
You must have
JavaScript support enabled to take
full advantage of all collection functions. In addition,
make sure that your browser is configured to accept
cookies, since cookies are a critical
component of maintaining your collection over time.
We cannot guarantee satisfactory
results with any other browsers, and recommend the latest
version of each for use with this service. You must
have JavaScript support enabled to use this feature fully (although
basic features will be available, some
functions will not work otherwise).
If your browser does not support JavaScript natively, or if
you have disabled JavaScript support in a browser that is
JavaScript-capable, the following message will
display on pages containing Article Collection links:
Article Collection functions
work best when viewed with a JavaScript-capable
and -enabled browser (see the online help for more information).
You will still be able to use the Article Collection, but with the following
differences:
- The graphical indicator that an article has been added
(
) will not load in place of the empty
checkbox since this behavior is a JavaScript function.
Note for
users of Netscape 3.x: this function will not work even if
JavaScript has been enabled; see our page devoted to
Netscape Browsers for more details.
- Upon returning to a TOC after viewing your collection,
you will not be returned to the
page at the "level" of the
item that you added; instead, you will be returned to the top
of the page and will have to scroll down to reach the
point where can resume browsing
(the ability to return to the page-level of the item initially checked
is controlled by a JavaScript function).
All other collection management functions (see below) are unaffected.
Should you wish to update to the latest versions of the browsers
recommended for use with this feature, please follow
either of the following links:
Overview
Each time you add an article by clicking on
the "Collect Article" icon (
),
it appears on your personal "Article Collection" page.
Articles that have already been added to your collection will
be marked by
an "Article Collected" icon (
); this icon will replace the "Collect
Article" icon so that you will know what has been added to your
collection as you browse.
You may add as many articles as you wish.
Collections may also be named to facilitate access at another time or another place.
See more detail about this feature below.
To access your collection at any time, click on the "View
Collection"
link which appears at the top of all screens devoted to browsing and searching
journal contents in both the OJPS and SPIN Web (it also appears
at the bottom of tables of contents for convenience).
Please note that your collection will remain accessible
for 90 days from the last time you added or deleted
any articles.
Important Icons
Those articles flagged with a solid, green circle (
) may be freely accessed
because you have subscription rights to any journal content that
is accessible only by subscribers to that journal. If already
logged in, you will be able to view the content immediately; if not
logged in, you will be required to login before viewing the content.
Those articles flagged with an inverted, yellow triangle
(
)
are not accessible directly since you
are either (1) not logged in if you have subscription rights to
the journal's content (if you do have rights, log in and the bullet will
turn green), or (2) do not have subscription rights to
to any of that journal's content.
Note that some
content may be freely accessible (Tables of Contents, Abstracts),
but PDFs are
only accessible via subscription or available for purchase via the "Buy An Article"
Online Document Delivery Service.
Collection Management Functions
From the Article Collection
page, you can:
- Name your collection so that it can be accessed from any location
by using the "Name/Retreive Collection" function.
- Create multiple named collections which you can organize according to
subject matter, for example.
- View the abstract if either freely available or if you are a
subscriber.
- View the full text (or sectioned full text)
of an article if you are a subscriber.
- View the PDF if you are a subscriber.
- Purchase the PDF via the "Buy An Article"
Online Document Delivery Service if you are not a subscriber.
- Remove any number of unwanted articles from your collection at any time
by clicking "Remove Article".
- Remove all articles from your collection by clicking
"Remove All Articles from Collection."
Naming Your Article Collection
Creating and naming your article collection is easy, and you may create
several different collections to suit your research needs.
There are some
important things to remember however:
- Your article collection
is accessible indefinitely, as long as it is accessed at least
once in 90 days (collections that are not
accessed at least once every 90 days are erased).
- Since your article collection is not tied to your journal subscription(s),
there are no security features associated with it. No one will be able to
access your journal subscription(s) via your article collection, but
at the same time, your collection is not password or login protected.
Therefore, you should carefully choose a unique name for your collection,
so that only you will be able to retrieve, and therefore change it.
If anyone is able to guess the name of your collection, and retrieve
it, then they will also be able to add to or remove articles from it.
- Be sure to select a name for your collection that you can
easily remember, and/or record the name that
you choose for your collection.
If you forget the name of your collection, customer service will not
be able to locate your collection for you. There are no accessible records
of named article collections.
- Rules for selecting a name for your collection
- You may use only letters and/or numbers. You may not use punctuation, and
there can be no spaces.
- You may not use any name that begins with "virt" (or any capitalization
variation of it). This is a reserved name
within the system.
- Capitalization is important, our system is case sensitive.
- You may use a maximum of 15 letters and/or numbers.
Creating a Named Collection
- Click on View Article Collection located on all browsing and searching pages.
It is also accessible on the OJPS banner from "My Article Collection".
- When the article collection page displays, click on NAME/RETRIEVE COLLECTION.
- Enter a selected name using the criteria mentioned above and click on RETRIEVE.
An empty article collection should now display and you are ready to make a collection for the name chosen.
To create additional named collections, follow the same procedure beginning with creating the name first
and then making the collection. Although you can name a collection after it is made, it is not advisable.
Returning to a Journal
When you want to resume browsing,
click on "Return to Journal." If you are using a
JavaScript-capable and -enabled browser, and
are browsing a TOC, you will be
returned to the TOC at the level at which you
last checked an item for inclusion in your collection; if
your browser is either not JavaScript-capable or it is but
you have turned off JavaScript support, you will be
returned to the top of the TOC.
Cookies and Your Article Collection
Like most online systems of this nature,
the Article Collection system, when invoked, places a
cookie in the cookie file of your browser to track each
action (adding and deleting articles, viewing
your collection, erasing your collection) involving updates to it.
The cookie is updated (time-stamped) with each action, but
if no updates are made within 90 days, your
collection will automatically be erased and the cookie
will delete itself from your hard drive
until you create another collection. If you have your browser configured
to reject cookies, and you wish to
use the Article Collection system, simply turn that functionality back on.
You can turn it off again as soon as you are finished (refer to
your browser documentation for details).
More information on cookies is available at
Cookie Central.
If you have created several collections, the last article collection that you
access before the end of a session is the collection that will be presented to you
upon your next session because of the cookie.
In order to access your other collections, simply
use the "Name/Retrieve Collection" feature to select the collection that you
wish to view.
You will be able to access your collection from any location if
you have selected a name for your collection using the "Name/Retrieve
Collection" feature. Please be aware that any changes made to your
collection from any location permanently affect the collection.
