What Types of Links Might I Encounter?

Reference sections in abstract views include, where available, several types of links to related article abstracts (links are explained in more detail in the section following this list):

Citation links: links where the actual citation is a hyperlink (e.g., Phys. Rev. D 40, 2172 (1989)) are linked to Scitation or other journal abstract view. No subscription required.

[SPIN]: linked to SPIN record. No subscription required.

[INSPEC],[MEDLINE],[SPIRES], etc.: linked to external databases. No subscription required.

[EPAPS]: linked to E-PAPS depository. No subscription required.

J. Cryst. Growth 200, 185 (1999)(ScienceDirect): Access to ScienceDirect abstracts consists of a simple two-step process (see below).

Where Do These Links Lead?

• Citation links: "Cross-journal" reference links are linked to the complete Scitation abstract views, and in journals operated for The American Physical Society, to abstracts on PROLA (the "Physical Review Online Archive") and to abstracts for journals at EDP Sciences, when the abstract is not covered on Scitation. These abstracts include their own set of references, in addition to links to related articles, citing articles, and records in external databases, as available.

• [SPIN]: SPIN reference links are linked to the SPIN record for journals published by AIP, and contains the article abstract. The SPIN abstract does not include its own set of references, and is available without a subscription.

• [INSPEC]  [MEDLINE] [SPIRES], etc.: External database links are offered to extend research capabilities (though all journals may not contain all links listed). (The American Institute of Physics, in cooperation with other organizations, offers Scitation subscribers access to these external databases through such hyperlinked references.)

• [EPAPS]: EPAPS (the electronic version of AIP's Physics Auxiliary Publication Service, or PAPS), is a low-cost depository for, and supplies copies of, material that is of too limited reader interest to warrant the number of pages required to publish in full in AIP and Member Society journals. E-PAPS deposits, beginning with issues published in 1998, are linked from within AIP and their Member Societies' journal references. Clicking on an E-PAPS link allows you to view the complete contents of a specific E-PAPS deposit.

For non-subscribers to ScienceDirect:

1. Click on the ScienceDirect reference:

   The article title will appear, along with the journal information, a link to the abstract, and a ScienceDirect subscribers personal login.

A "Back" button link is provided, at the top of the ScienceDirect abstract that will bring you back to the AIP/APS abstract containing the ScienceDirect reference.

For individual subscribers to ScienceDirect:

• Enter your personal login to access the full-text article.

For institutional subscribers to ScienceDirect:

• Access to full-text articles for institutional subscribers to ScienceDirect is controlled automatically by IP address.
