About Computing in Science and Engineering Online

[ Introduction | Service Description | Getting Started ]

Introduction

Physics, medicine, astronomy -- these and other hard sciences share a common need for efficient algorithms, system software, and computer architecture to address large computational problems. And yet, useful advances in computational techniques that could benefit many researchers are rarely shared. To meet that need, Computing in Science & Engineering presents scientific and computational contributions to the practice of science and engineering in a clear and accessible format.

Computing in Science & Engineering is copublished by the IEEE Computer Society and the American Institute of Physics in technical cosponsorship with the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society and the IEEE Signal Processing Society.

Service Description

This online journal enables users to:

O Browse an HTML version of the current issue Table of Contents (TOC), which contains hyperlinks from individual titles to the abstract of each title. From both the TOC and abstract "views," users can download/view the full-text PDF and PostScript versions of the article, including all figures, tables, and references. In addition, users can select from a list of all available prior issues, and browse any HTML TOC, read abstracts, and download/view PDF and/or PostScript articles. Getting Started

Here's a recommended checklist for first-time users:

O Make sure you have a browser that supports (a) authentication (login and password), (b) HTML forms (for database queries), and (c) HTML tables. While several other browsers are "Netscape-compliant," and their use should allow you to take full advantage of all of the journal's features, we recommend Netscape Navigator (more details are available from the Online Help page). As stated, authentication is required in order to enforce the publisher's subscription controls over its journals. This control is based on Netscape software products, and depends on the Netscape "cookie" mechanism (please refer to the OJS FAQ for more information on cookies) to authenticate and track both individual and institutional users throughout the system. While browsers that do not support this mechanism may function adequately, AIP OJS technical support in regard to authentication problems will NOT be extended to users who are not running either Netscape Navigator (version 2.0 or higher) or Microsoft Internet Explorer (version 2.0 or higher).

O To use the Article Collection feature, and the DocumentStore online document delivery service, we recommend that you use the latest version of Netscape Navigator (4.04+), which is part of the Netscape Communicator suite that is available from Netscape Communications Corporation. Microsoft Internet Explorer can also be used, and we recommend version 4.01, which is freely available for various computer platforms from Microsoft Corporation. We cannot guarantee satisfactory results with any other browsers or versions. JavaScript is employed throughout this service, so your browser should be JavaScript-capable and-enabled (refer to your browser documentation for details on how to enable and disable JavaScript support). If you wish to check your browser for JavaScript support, click here. The system will not work unless your browser is JavaScript-capable and you have JavaScript support "turned on." (Refer to your browser's documentation for more information on its JavaScript capabilities and how to toggle JavaScript support on and off.) Your browser must also be configured to accept "cookies."

O To download/view full-text PDF versions of articles, as well as PDF versions of issue tables of contents, you must have (a) Adobe Acrobat Exchange, (b) the Adobe Acrobat Reader, (c) the Adobe Acrobat Reader browser plug-in, or (d) another "viewer" that can display or otherwise manipulate PDF files (more details are available from the Online Help page). An Acrobat Tutorial is also available.

OTo download/view full-text PostScript versions of articles, you must have a PostScript viewer or any other application that enables you to otherwise manipulate PostScript files. More information is available from the Online Help page.

OAIP Online Journals have been designed for the following minimum Internet access configuration: 14,400 bps modem. Tips on configuring your browser for slower connections (and to optimize any connection) are available from the Online Help page.

O Consult the AIP Online Journal FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) for a compendium of capsulized information about the Online Journal Service.

O Read the Online Help thoroughly, especially with regard to using the Acrobat products in conjunction with your browser, and for detailed tutorials on how to search the Online Journal databases.
