Frequently Asked Questions About E-Mail Alerts

How do I sign up for e-mail alerts?

From any page in the ECS Digital Library click on the Content Alerts link to go to the Table of Contents E-Mail Alerting Service page. Enter your e-mail address, select the publication whose table of contents (TOC) you wish to receive, then select the format you prefer. Click the "Subscribe" button. Shortly thereafter, you will receive an e-mail message requesting you to confirm the service you have selected. Follow the instructions in the confirmation request e-mail. Upon confirmation, you will receive a subscription acceptance e-mail. The next message you receive from the service will be the TOC of the next issue as soon as it is published online.

Why am I getting e-mail from "listserv@listserv.aip.org"?

The ECS Digital Library is hosted by the American Institute of Physics (AIP) on its Scitation platform. The software chosen to handle e-mail alerts for Scitation is called LISTSERV®. The address "listserv@listserv.aip.org" is machine-generated and configured to process confirmation e-mails only.

How do I unsubscribe from the service?

From any page in the ECS Digital Library click on the Content Alerts link to go to the Table of Contents E-Mail Alerting Service page. Enter your e-mail address, select the publication whose table of contents (TOC) you wish to cancel, then select the same format you originally selected. Click the "Unsubscribe" button. Shortly thereafter, you will receive an e-mail message requesting you to confirm your cancellation. Follow the instructions in the confirmation request e-mail. Upon confirmation, you will receive a subscription cancellation e-mail saying you have been removed from the list.

How do I change my e-mail address?

To change the e-mail address to which the alerts are sent, you must unsubscribe to the service of your old address and subscribe anew with your new address.

What is the difference between plain-text (ASCII) and HTML formats?

ASCII (plain-text) TOCs are easily digestible by all mail clients, and are designed for users who have mail programs that cannot handle HTML-formatted e-mail. URLs in ASCII alerts are not clickable links, however, they may be copied and pasted into a Web browser.

HTML-formatted TOCs are fully hyperlinked and have the look and feel of Web pages; that is, all links in the message body are clickable and can be followed as if you were browsing the information on a Web page. NOTE: HTML-formatted TOCs are larger than their plain-text counterparts, so take this into account if disk space is an issue. In addition, some e-mail clients do not support HTML, e.g., Pine, so be sure to consult the Help for your particular application. If you have opted for the HTML format and receive what looks like gibberish, you have most likely received an HTML TOC that your mailer cannot render correctly and you are seeing the actual HTML code. You should immediately unsubscribe yourself from the HTML-format and subscribe anew with the ASCII option.

How do I switch delivery formats?

From any page in the ECS Digital Library click on the Content Alerts link to go to the Table of Contents E-Mail Alerting Service page. Enter your e-mail address, select the publication whose table of contents (TOC) you receive, then select the format you prefer. Click the "Subscribe" button. Shortly thereafter, you will receive an e-mail message requesting you to confirm the service you have selected. Follow the instructions in the confirmation request e-mail. Upon confirmation, you will receive an email confirming the change in your delivery format.
