News

December 7, 1998: Reference sections in journal abstracts have been enhanced to offer OJPS subscribers greater research capabilities as follows:

  • Citation Links: OJPS Abstracts include cross-journal links to complete OJPS abstracts (citation links), which include their own reference sections, including Citation Links, Citing Article Links, (reverse references), and Editorial Links ("See Also") links. Please refer to our Reference Linking information page: Reference Sections and Reference Linking in Abstracts, for additional information.

  • Citing Article Links: Citing Article Links (reverse references) are hyperlinks to referring articles which reference the article currently being viewed.

December 7, 1998: This journal now features the following additional enhancements.

  • Author Search Application: The Author Search application offers a simple way to search for 1 or more authors quickly without using the Advanced Search interface where the syntax is more complicated. The Author Search application interface provides separate fields for First Name/Initial, Middle Name/Initial, and Last Name. This application is more effective than using the current Simple Search in finding an author's name. It's faster, more specific and leaves no doubt in a users mind as to how the name should be entered.

  • Jump Links: Navigational aids are provided in the following HTML views which will enable users to jump to Previous/Next Volume, Volume Index, Previous/Next Issue, Issue Index, Previous/Next Abstract, and Top or Bottom of Page. The Issue Table of Contents view also includes "Subject Heading and Sub-section Jumps." Subject Section Head Jump Links allow the user to quickly jump to a particular section of interest, and if sub-headings are available, an option to jump forward or backward to the "Previous" or "Next" Sub-section is also offered.

Issue List view: Jump to the "Previous" or "Next" volume, or the Volume Index. If you are in the most recent volume, there will be no link to the "Next" volume.

    [ Previous / Next Volume| Volume Index | Bottom of Page ]

Issue Table of Contents view: Jump to the "Previous" or "Next" issue or the Issue Index. If you are in the most recent issue, there will be no link to the "Next" issue.

[ Previous / Next Issue | Available Volumes | Issue Index | Bottom of Page]

Jump to a particular subject section or Sub-section:

  • REVIEW ARTICLE  (subject heading)
  • ARTICLES
  • NOTES
  • ERRATA

Sub-sections include jump links to the "Previous" or "Next" subject, and a link back to the Issue Index:

    OPTICS; ATOMS and MOLECULES; SPECTROSCOPY
[ Previous / Next Subject | Issue Index | Top / Bottom of Page ]
Sub-section jump links work slightly different than other jump links. If you are at the last subject, there will be a "Next Subject" link. This link will bring you back to the top of the page.

Abstract view: Jump to the "Previous" or "Next" abstract or Issue Table of Contents. If you are in the first abstract of an issue, there will be no link to the "Previous" abstract. If you are in the last abstract of an issue, there will be no link to the "Next" abstract.

December 7, 1998: This journal now includes the following changes.

    • Non-Cookie Browser Support Termination: Support for browsers that either (a) do not natively support cookies, or (b) access this journal with cookie support disabled has been removed from the system. Users can freely navigate content above this journal's fee/free line with either cookie-challenged clients or with cookie acceptance disabled, but authentication for content below the line (references, full text, and searching, all of which require either an individual subscription or an access from a subscribing institution) requires that browsers be configured to accept cookies. You will not be able to access such content unless cookies are enabled and will be redirected to a page containing instructions for reconfiguring your browser to accept cookies as well as for upgrading to a cookie-capable browser.

    • Compressed PostScript: Due to the large file size of PostScript files, PostScript files are delivered in a compressed format (GZipped PS). For additional information on using GZipped PS files and links to Postscript software download pages, please refer to our GZipped PS information page: Using Gzipped (Compressed) PostScript Files.

November 4, 1998: This journal now features Subject Section Headings.

    • Electronic Section Headings have been developed by the AIP development team so that the Web version of the journal mirrors the print version, increasing functionality and usability (Use CTRL/F to search and jump to section heading).

July 29, 1998: Software changes have been installed to aid in the future enhancement of this journal. The immediate implications of this are as follows:

    • HTML math is now displayed in the article titles in the HTML ToC's. For more information about HTML rendering of complex mathematical expressions, please see the help file "HTML Limitations: Math; Author Affiliations".

    • Your browser bookmarks or favorites for the HTML ToC's (tables of contents) and volume/issue lists must be updated. If you use an old bookmark or favorite link to one of these pages, you will be asked to access the journal directly and reset your bookmark(s) or favorite(s) accordingly.

April 29, 1998: Another feature has been added to our service.

    • DocumentStore: This is an online document delivery service where a user may purchase a PDF formatted article for viewing and downloading. See here for more information.

March 23, 1998: Additional features have been added to this journal.

    • Article Collection: A subscriber now has the ability to select articles and hold them in a file to be retrieved as often as desired over a period of 30 days. See more details.

    • The HTML Tables of Contents to the AIP online journals are now available to non-subscribers.

    • Reference sections are now available in the abstracts, including links to those citations available in AIP's SPIN database and IEE's INSPEC database.

July 23, 1997: This journal now features the following enhancements:

    • Links to related papers are now available in the abstracts. Further details are available.

    • In abstracts, mathematical expressions, symbols, diacritical marks, and other entities that were previously rendered using "wordmath equivalents" (i.e., the word "alpha" or the string [alpha sup 2]) are now rendered as characters using inline images. However, "wordmath" will still be used in the HTML Tables of Contents. The wordmath will also be retained in the "alt tags" (alternate text) associated with each image for users that have their browsers configured to suppress display of images.

    • In addition to the PDF full-text option, a PostScript (Level 2) download/viewing option is now available. You can access this option by clicking on any "More Options" link from any abstract view. Under "More Options," you will find links to download/view PDFs, download/view PostScript files, and place document delivery orders. For more information on viewing and printing PostScript files, consult the Online Help specific to using the Ghostscript/Ghostview application.

    • SPIN database coverage for all SPIN journals has been extended back to 1975.

    • A password-changing mechanism is now available for individual users. For access and more information, consult the OJS Password-Changing Form.

    • Some cosmetic changes are worth noting:

      • The HTML TOCs now feature an option to download/view the PDF file, as well as a "More Options" link (which features the PDF option as well as the new download/view PostScript and document delivery options).
      • The abstract displays now feature multiple "Download/View Article" links throughout the page.
      • The PACS numbers are displayed after the PII on the bottom of each abstract since the tabular array of bibliohgraphic information has be relocated to an "alternate abstract view" (see next item)
      • The tabular array containing additional bibliographic information can now be accessed by following the "Additional Information" link appearing after the PACS numbers. An "alternate abstract view" will then be displayed, containing the table of additional bibliographic information.

    Getting Started

    Here's a recommended checklist for first-time users:

O Make sure you have a browser that supports (a) authentication (login and password), (b) HTML forms (for database queries), and (c) HTML tables. While several other browsers are "Netscape-compliant," and their use should allow you to take full advantage of all of the journal's features, we recommend Netscape Navigator (more details are available from the Online Help page). As stated, authentication is required in order to enforce the publisher's subscription controls over its journals. This control is based on Netscape software products, and depends on the Netscape "cookie" mechanism (please refer to the OJS FAQ for more information on cookies) to authenticate and track both individual and institutional users throughout the system. While browsers that do not support this mechanism may function adequately, AIP OJS technical support in regard to authentication problems will NOT be extended to users who are not running either Netscape Navigator (version 2.0 or higher) or Microsoft Internet Explorer (version 2.0 or higher).

O To use the Article Collection feature, and the DocumentStore online document delivery service, we recommend that you use the latest version of Netscape Navigator (4.04+), which is part of the Netscape Communicator suite that is available from Netscape Communications Corporation. Microsoft Internet Explorer can also be used, and we recommend version 4.01, which is freely available for various computer platforms from Microsoft Corporation. We cannot guarantee satisfactory results with any other browsers or versions. JavaScript is employed throughout this service, so your browser should be JavaScript-capable and-enabled (refer to your browser documentation for details on how to enable and disable JavaScript support). If you wish to check your browser for JavaScript support, click here. The system will not work unless your browser is JavaScript-capable and you have JavaScript support "turned on." (Refer to your browser's documentation for more information on its JavaScript capabilities and how to toggle JavaScript support on and off.) Your browser must also be configured to accept "cookies."

The chart below shows the minimum browser requirements for the different OJPS services:

Note that AIP OJS technical support for specific services will NOT be extended to users who are not using software that does not meet the minimum requirements.

O To download/view full-text PDF versions of articles, as well as PDF versions of issue tables of contents, you must have (a) Adobe Acrobat Exchange, (b) the Adobe Acrobat Reader, (c) the Adobe Acrobat Reader browser plug-in, or (d) another "viewer" that can display or otherwise manipulate PDF files (more details are available from the Online Help page). An Acrobat Tutorial is also available.

OTo download/view full-text PostScript versions of articles, you must have a PostScript viewer or any other application that enables you to otherwise manipulate PostScript files. More information is available from the Online Help page.

O AIP Online Journals have been designed for the following minimum Internet access configuration: 14,400 bps modem. Tips on configuring your browser for slower connections (and to optimize any connection) are available from the Online Help page.

O Consult the AIP Online Journal FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) for a compendium of capsulized information about the Online Journal Service.

O Read the Online Help thoroughly, especially with regard to using the Acrobat products in conjunction with your browser, and for detailed tutorials on how to search the Online Journal databases.
