COMPETITIVE CLUSTERING
IN A GRANULAR GAS

Mixtures of large and small particles, shaken vertically in a compartmentalized container, show competitive clustering: By tuning the shaking strength, the mixture can be made to cluster in the compartment initially containing most of the large particles (at moderately strong shaking) or in the compartment dominated by small ones (at mild shaking). The video clip shows that the effect is robust enough to work even for candy.

For a quantitative explanation of the competitive clustering, see René Mikkelsen, Devaraj van der Meer, Ko van der Weele, and Detlef Lohse, Phys. Rev. Lett. 89, 214301 (2002).
