AIP Conference Proceedings 896

Conference Location and Date: Batavia, Illinois, 6-8 September 2006

Subseries: Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics; Astronomy and Astrophysics; Nuclear and High Energy Physics

Published April 2007; ISBN 978-0-7354-0401-4, One Volume, Print; 264 pages; 6 3/8 X 9 1/4 inches; Softcover; $108.00

Readership: Particle and nuclear experimental physicists who use hadronic shower simulators to calculate their signals and backgrounds in their detectors. In particular neutrino physicists, linear collider calorimetry detector designers radiation physicists who calculate radiation doses on humans, cosmic ray physicists who use atmospheric showers to detect high energy cosmic rays and neutrinos.

The goal of the workshop was to bring together world experts in the field of hadronic shower development, to establish a collaborative effort that will lead to a better understanding and simulation of hadronic showers relevant to hadron calorimetry at the ILC and LHC, neutrino fluxes and atmospheric showers. The workshop evaluated existing event generator and transport codes. Before the workshop we carried out a benchmark analysis, whereby various hadronic shower simulation scenarios were submitted to code developers and the results were presented at the workshop. The workshop identified the shortcomings of existing hadronic shower simulations and we hope to develop a collaborative plan to improve our understanding of showers. The workshop brought out the need to acquire new data to improve shower models.
