- Effective with the January/February 2003 issue (Vol. 21, No. 1), most articles in the Journal of Vacuum Science and Technology A will be published online individually as they are completed, in advance of publication of the full issue. As soon as each item is ready for publication, it will be published in the online journal in an "open" (or partial) issue. From the moment of publication, each item is fully citable. Following publication of all such "accelerated articles," the remaining content will be published and the issue will "close" (and will be printed according to the monthly journal schedule). To view articles in the current open issue, choose the "Browse Accelerated Articles" link on the entry page or on other journal pages. Noteworthy changes related to this transition are: (1) The Rapid Communications section has been redesignated Letters, and now appears at the front of the issue (with page numbers preceded by an "L"); (2) The "Search Current Issue" database contains the most recent completed issue as well as the open issue.

SPIN database have been made, including
- "Smarter" author searching
- More complex searches made easier
- More searchable fields
- New sorting options
More details about these improvements and other changes can be found here.
- The American Institute of Physics announced today that on February 13 it posted the one millionth record to its SPIN abstracts database. SPIN (Searchable Physics Information Notices) offers complete, searchable bibliographic records for nearly 100 journals published by leading scientific and engineering societies. In addition to those who subscribe to journals on AIP's Online Journal Publishing Service (OJPS), SPIN is available to customers of Dialog, EBSCOhost, and Information Express.
